Alabama has very hot summers and mild winters, though the South tends to be warmer due to its location near the Gulf of Mexico, and the North, especially the Appalachian Mountains, tends to be cooler. Rainfall occurs year-round, with thunderstorms being common, along with occasional hurricanes and tropical storms.
State flower: Camellia
With an average yearly temperature of 63.3°(F), Birmingham has a April 2-November 9 growing season and is located in a subtropical moist forest. Common grasses include bahia grass, bermuda grass, tall fescue and zoysia grass .
AveragesAlaska is known for being the coldest state in the U.S. with the far northern part of the state being an Arctic climate with long, very cold winters and short cool summers. The southeast is the wettest and warmest part of the state and is the only region where during the winter the average daytime high is above freezing. Anchorage and the south central portion of the state are mild for Alaska, due to its location near the seacoast.

With an average yearly temperature of 37°(F), Anchorage has a May 8-September 23 growing season and is located in a boreal moist forest. Common grasses include fine fescue and Kentucky blue grass.
AveragesArizona as a whole is characterized as semiarid to arid with a hot desert climate at lower elevations, with mild winters and very hot summers. The higher elevations have cold winters and mild summers. There are two rainy seasons, coming from the Pacific Ocean in the winter and a monsoon season in the summer.

AveragesHot, humid summers with short, cool winters. There tends to be more rain in the south, and snowfall does not occur often, though it is more common in the northern part of the state along with hail, snow and ice storms. Spring and summer often see severe thunderstorms, while winter and spring nor'easters can bring heavy snow and cause coastal flooding. The southern part of the state has a longer growing season than the northern part.

AveragesFlorida has the mildest winters of any state in the Continental United States. The summers are hot, but thundershowers from May-October provide afternoon and evening relief from the heat.

With an average yearly temperature of 62.55°(F), Atlanta has a March 27-November 13 growing season and is located in a warm temperate moist forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass, centipede grass, St, Augustine grass, tall fescue and zoysia grass.
AveragesSince Hawaii is in the tropics, there is very little variation in the temperature range and length of day throughout the year. While there are frequent light showers throughout the islands, the south and west (leeward) sides tend to be drier, and most rainfall comes from trade winds on the north and east (windward) sides.
State flower: Hawaiian hibiscus
With an average yearly temperature of 77.6°(F), Honolulu has a Frost free growing season and is located in a warm temperate moist forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass, centipede grass, seashore paspalum, St. Augustine grass and zoysia grass.
AveragesIdaho sees hot summers with low humidity, and cold winters, though temperatures below zero are unusual. The northern part of the state gets more rain than the south, which also has warmer summers. However, the temperatures are not as low as expected in the higher elevations due to the maritime effect of the Pacific Ocean, which is not seen in the eastern part of the state where rain patterns are reversed, with wetter summers and drier winters.

With an average yearly temperature of 52.5°(F), Boise has a May 22-October 6 growing season and is located in a cool temperate steppe. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass and tall fescue.
AveragesIllinois has hot, humid summers and cold winters, with moderate temperatures in the spring and fall. The southern part of the state has more moderate winters than the north. The state has an above average number of days of thunderstorm activity.

With an average yearly temperature of 51.3°(F), Chicago has a April 20-October 24 growing season and is located in a cool temperate moist forest. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass and perennial rye grass.
AveragesIndiana has hot, humid summers with cold, cloudy winters. Spring is the wettest time of the year, though rainfall is fairly uniform year-round, with the south receiving the most rain. Snowfall in the state varies widely with around 14 inches being seen yearly in the south, and up to 80 inches of lake-effect snow from Lake Michigan being seen in the northwest and north central part of the state.

With an average yearly temperature of 53.1°(F), Indianapolis has a April 27-October 7 growing season and is located in a cool temperate moist forest. Common grasses include bent grass, fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass and tall fescue.
AveragesIowa sees extremes of both heat and cold. The summers are hot and humid while winters can be harsh with a lot of snow. Iowa experiences many thunderstorms, the majority of which occur between April and September.

With an average yearly temperature of 50.85°(F), Des Moines has a April 20-October 12 growing season and is located in a cool temperate moist forest. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass and perennial rye grass.
AveragesIn Kansas, summers are usually hot with moderate humidity and the winters are mild. Spring and summer often bring strong and severe thunderstorms, which can spawn tornadoes.

With an average yearly temperature of 56.65°(F), Wichita has a April 12-October 26 growing season and is located in a warm temperate dry forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass, buffalo grass, tall fescue and zoysia grass.
AveragesAll four distinct seasons can be seen in the state of Kentucky, with the overall climate usually being mild and moderate. There are warm, humid, rainy summers and moderately cold, snowy winters.

With an average yearly temperature of 58.2°(F), Louisville has a April 8-October 30 growing season and is located in a warm temperate moist forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass, tall fescue and zoysia grass.
AveragesLouisiana has long, hot, humid summers and short, mild winters. Rain is frequent year-round, with the summer being the wettest time of the year. Summer is also subject to frequent thunderstorms. The state also is susceptible to major hurricanes, especially around New Orleans, and often sees tropical cyclones.

With an average yearly temperature of 68.35°(F), Baton Rouge has a February 26-November 29 growing season and is located in a subtropical moist forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass, carpet grass, centipede grass, St. Augustine grass and zoysia grass .
AveragesWith an average yearly temperature of 69.55°(F), New Orleans has a Frost free growing season and is located in a subtropical moist forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass, carpet grass, centipede grass, St. Augustine grass, seashore paspalum and zoysia grass.
AveragesMaine has warm, humid summers that are vulnerable to severe thunderstorms between May-August. There are cold, snowy winters which are especially harsh in the northern part of the state which can see 60-110 inches of snow annually compared to 50-70 inches along the coast.

With an average yearly temperature of 46.4°(F), Portland has a May 2-October 6 growing season and is located in a cool temperate wet forest. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass and tall fescue.
AveragesMaryland summers are humid and hot, with temperatures being cooler in the East. In the winter the Eastern Shore and the south are cool, with colder weather and more snow in the west. July and August see the most rain as there are thunderstorms an average of once every five days.

With an average yearly temperature of 58.45°(F), Baltimore has a April 11-October 29 growing season and is located in a warm temperate moist forest. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass and tall fescue.
AveragesMassachusetts experiences warm summers and cold, snowy winters. While it is slightly wetter in winter, rain is distributed pretty evenly throughout the year. The state can be subject to nor'easters and severe winter storms, while the summers can bring thunderstorms.

With an average yearly temperature of 47.8°(F), Worcester has a April 26-October 14 growing season and is located in a warm temperate moist forest. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass and tall fescue.
AveragesWith an average yearly temperature of 51.4°(F), Boston has a April 7-November 7 growing season and is located in a cool temperate moist forest. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass and perennial rye grass.
AveragesThere are two regions in Michigan- the southern and central parts of the Lower Peninsula have a warmer climate with hot summers and cold winters, while the northern part of the Lower Peninsula and the whole of the Upper Peninsula have warm, but shorter summers and longer cold to very cold winters. The state often sees heavy lake-effect snow in winter through the middle of February. Heavy thunderstorm activity is common in the southern part of the Lower Peninsula, while late spring and early summer are tornado season.

AveragesMinnesota has hot summers and cold winters, with some of the widest variety of weather in the United States. The growing season goes from 90 days in the Iron Range, to 160 days in the southeast part of the state.

With an average yearly temperature of 46.15°(F), Minneapolis has a April 30-October 5 growing season and is located in a cool temperate moist forest. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass and perennial rye grass.
AveragesMississippi is usually humid, with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Thunderstorms are common, and the late summer and fall can see hurricanes coming from the Gulf of Mexico. Tornadoes tend to occur in the northern part of the state at the beginning of the year, with the south seeing more at the end of the year.

With an average yearly temperature of 64.55°(F), Jackson has a March 23-November 9 growing season and is located in a subtropical moist forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass and zoysia grass.
AveragesMissouri has long, hot summers with cold winters. However, long periods of very hot weather or very cold weather are uncommon, as the summer sees times of dry, cool weather, and the winter is broken up with periods of mild, above freezing temperatures.

With an average yearly temperature of 56.7°(F), Kansas City has a April 7-October 28 growing season and is located in a cool temperate moist forest. Common grasses include tall fescue and zoysia grass.
AveragesWith an average yearly temperature of 54.75°(F), St. Louis has a April 22-October 5 growing season and is located in a cool temperate moist forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass, fine fescue, tall fescue and zoysia grass.
AveragesMontana has a varied climate, due to an elevation range from 2,000 feet to almost 13,000 feet above sea level. Snowfall in the western mountains can reach up to 300 inches while the East can see as little as 20 inches. However, the west as a whole has a milder climate than the east with cooler summers and warmer winters.

With an average yearly temperature of 48.05°(F), Billings has a May 8-September 27 growing season and is located in a cool temperate steppe. Common grasses include fine fescue and Kentucky blue grass.
AveragesNebraska has hot summers and cold winters. Thunderstorms and tornadoes usually occur in the spring and summer, but occasionally can happen in the fall.

With an average yearly temperature of 50.65°(F), Omaha has a April 29-October 2 growing season and is located in a cool temperate moist forest. Common grasses include buffalo grass, Kentucky blue grass and tall fescue.
AveragesNevada is the driest state in the United States, and is comprised of mostly desert. The winters tend to be long and fairly cold in the north, but shorter and milder in the south, with most of the rain falling on the east and northeast parts of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

With an average yearly temperature of 69.3°(F), Las Vegas has a February 16-November 27 growing season and is located in a warm temperate desert. Common grasses include bermuda grass, perennial rye grass and zoysia grass.
AveragesNew Hampshire has humid, warm to hot summers, and cold, wet winters with rain occurring throughout the year. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the north and in the mountains, with an average snowfall of 60-100 inches across the state.

With an average yearly temperature of 48°(F), Manchester has a May 19-September 15 growing season and is located in a warm temperate desert. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass and tall fescue.
AveragesSummers are hot and humid in New Jersey, with thunderstorms not being uncommon, while winters are usually cold and often see snowstorms known as nor'easters. Proximity to the Atlantic Ocean moderates temperatures and provides moisture for storm systems.
State flower: Violet
With an average yearly temperature of 54.9°(F), Trenton has a April 24-October 15 growing season and is located in a warm temperate desert. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass and tall fescue.
AveragesNew Mexico has a semiarid to arid climate with warm to hot summers with scattered thunderstorms, and moderate to cold winters with some snow. With a mix of mountains, high plains, and desert, the freeze-free season varies from more than 200 days in the southern valleys to less than 80 days in the northern mountains.

With an average yearly temperature of 57.1°(F), Albuquerque has a April 16-October 28 growing season and is located in a cool temperate desert scrub. Common grasses include buffalo grass, Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass and tall fescue.
AveragesNew York has warm summers with cold winters, along with crisp, cool spring and fall seasons. However, Upstate New York experiences much longer and colder winters than those conditions seen in Downstate New York.

AveragesWith an average yearly temperature of 55.15°(F), New York City has a April 1-November 15 growing season and is located in a cool temperate moist forest. Common grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye grass and tall fescue.
AveragesNorth Carolina has the greatest range in altitude of any state east of the Mississippi, ranging from sea level on the coast to 6,684 feet at the top of Mt. Mitchell, which makes for a wide variety of climates in the state. There are hot, humid summers with cold winters that are milder on the coast. There are usually 40-50 thunderstorms yearly, most of which occur during the summer months.

AveragesNorth Dakota has warm to hot summers and cold winters characterized by below freezing temperatures and snow. The western part of the state has less rain and less humidity but similar temperatures. There can be a large difference in temperatures, not just between seasons but in the span of a day.

AveragesSummers in Ohio are hot and humid, while winters are usually cool to cold, with the northern part of the state near Lake Erie getting the most snow. There is moderate rain year-round.

AveragesWeather in Oklahoma can vary widely within short distances and can change drastically in a short amount of time. The state is known for severe thunderstorms, damaging thunderstorm winds, large hail and is hit by an average of 62 tornadoes a year.

AveragesOregon sees a wide range of climates across the state. West of the Cascade Mountains you see cold winters with frequent rain, while central and eastern Oregon are much drier, but see more snow. There is significantly less rain as you move west to east.

AveragesPennsylvania has humid summers and cold winters. The southeast part of the state is the warmest, and as you move west towards the Allegheny Mountains in the interior part of the state, the winters become colder and snowfall is greater.

AveragesRhode Island has warm to hot summers and cool to cold winters with a mix of rain and snow. The state can be susceptible to tropical storms and hurricanes coming up the Eastern Seaboard.

Rain in the summer and occasional fall months comes from the hot and humid summer conditions that lend themselves to tropical cyclones and afternoon thunderstorms (which often bring hail and damaging winds.) You will see freezing rain more than snow or rain in the winter.

With an average yearly temperature of 63.8°(F), Columbia has a March 18-November 12 growing season and is located in a subtropical moist forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass, centipede grass, rye grass, St. Augustine grass and zoysia grass.
AveragesWith an average yearly temperature of 48.3°(F), Charleston has a February 9-December 22 growing season and is located in a subtropical moist forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass, centipede grass, St. Augustine grass and zoysia grass.
AveragesSouth Dakota has four distinct seasons with cold, dry summers and hot somewhat humid summers. The Northwest portion of the state is semi-arid and sees less rain than the semi-humid southeast part of the state.

AveragesTennessee has hot and humid summers and mild to cool winters, with the Gulf of Mexico and winds from the south accounting for the majority of the state's rainfall. There is an average of 50 days of thunderstorms a year, which can bring large hail and damaging winds, and an average of 18 tornadoes per year.

With an average yearly temperature of 59.25°(F), Nashville has a April 6-October 28 growing season and is located in a warm temperate moist forest. Common grasses include bermuda grass, fine fescue, Kentucky blue grass, rye grass and zoysia grass.

AveragesThe climate varies greatly in Texas with five different regions with different climate patterns. The western part of the state is more arid than the eastern, which is more humid, however, summers are hot statewide. While winter can bring snow to the northern and western parts of the state, it is unusual to see in the central and southern areas. Texas has the most tornadoes yearly in the United States with an average of 139. Thunderstorms are very common.
